International Rose Test Garden, Washington Park · Portland
More than 10,000 roses of hundreds of varieties fill the terraced beds of the oldest continuously operating rose test garden in the U.S., with views of the city and Mount Hood. Roses bloom late May through October, but the garden is free and open daily, 5am–10pm. Paid guided tours are optional; parking lots charge, and the Washington Park free shuttle isn't running right now.
Portland's 'museum of living trees' on a Washington Park ridgetop is always free to visit, with 12 miles of trails, more than 2,300 kinds of trees, all three species of redwood and strong fall color. The visitor center (10am–4pm) hands out free maps and activities in English and Spanish, and free public tours and hikes run seasonally. Parking lots charge.
